A Wheel of Time Wiki

Basel Gill was the former innkeeper of The Queen's Blessing in Caemlyn and considers himself to be a good Queen's man.

Appearance[]

He is stout and on the plump side. He is pink-faced and has greying hair that he tries to comb over his bald spot. He is 50–55 years old.[1]

History[]

He has an Aes Sedai in his family, Jennet Cobb. Her parents were innkeepers of the Queen's Blessing and her brother is a direct ancestor of Basel. This may explain why he has an uncommonly positive attitude towards Aes Sedai.

He was a soldier and saw action during the Aiel War.

He has known Thom Merrilin for many years, since the time when Thom was court-bard to Queen Morgase. It was this long-standing friendship that leads him to give aid to Rand al'Thor and Mat Cauthon when they arrive in Caemlyn

Activities[]

Meeting Rand[]

His friendship with Thom Merrilin prompts him to allow Mat and Rand stay in an attic room while waiting for Moiraine Damodred and the rest of their party to reach Caemlyn.[2]

Mat and Thom stay in The Queen's Blessing before beginning their journey to Tear.[3] Thom asks Gill to start rumors about Lord Gaebril that will hopefully reach Morgase's ears. Gill agrees saying that he will pretend it is one of the bad dreams he has been having.[4]

Leaving Caemlyn[]

Master Gill, Lamgwin Dorn, and Breane Taborwin accompany Queen Morgase, Lini Eltring, and Martyn Tallanvor when they flee Caemlyn.[5] They arrive in Amadicia and are held captive in the Fortress of the Light by Pedron Niall. He manages to escape with Morgase and the rest of her crew with the help of Sebban Balwer.

While traveling in Ghealdan he and his group are saved by Perrin Aybara when they are attacked by the Prophet's men. They then join with Perrin's army and become attendants under Faile Bashere. Perrin recognizes Gill, having met him before. Gill becomes Perrin's shambayan.

Perrin sends him north just before the attack on the Shaido in Malden with the intention of catching up with him afterwards. His force is intercepted by the Children of the Light, who keep them captive. He is returned to Perrin's army after Perrin's trial. He finally leaves Perrin's camp to continue serving Morgase, when her identity is revealed to everyone.

Vision[]

During Rand's confrontation with the Dark One, Basel appears in one of the visions back in the Queen's Blessing. In the vision, the Dark One has already won the Last Battle, but has caused everyone to believe the Light had won. The Dark One also removes everyone's consciences so that they have no empathy for others, killing, robbing, and lying to others for their own gain with no remorse. In the vision, Rand runs to the Queens Blessing to escape pursuers, where he runs into Basel. Basel explains that anyone who can't protect their life from others has no use for that life, so there's nothing wrong with him killing and robbing Rand. The vision ends shortly after Rand uses the One Power to tie up Basel and the three guards that were about to rob him.
