Blademasters are expert swordsmen (or women), who have trained and practiced to the height of the art. This recognition is not given lightly; one must either be judged by five blademasters unanimously, or kill another blademaster in fair combat, to achieve the rank. Many blademasters (but not all) carry heron-mark swords.

In The Gathering Storm, a new blademaster is introduced whose name is Sleete, a Warder bonded to Hattori. Gareth Bryne is reavealed as a blademaster as well.
