Jarna Malari (pronounced: JAHR-nah MAL-ah-ree) was an Aes Sedai and Sitter for the Gray Ajah and secretly head of the Black Ajah.[1]
Appearance and Personality[]
She had liquid brown eyes and long black hair which was going white at the temples.[2][3] She was 5'6" or 168 cm in height.[3]
She was well-loved and respected by many Aes Sedai, seen as a model of virtue with a saintly reputation.[3]
History[]
Sometime prior to the Aiel War, she was made a Sitter for the Gray Ajah.[2]
She made inquiries with Moiraine Damodred about her intentions to stand for the Sun Throne.[2]
In 979 NE, she ordered the torture (and murder) of Tamra Ospenya. It is not clear if she participated in this, but the interrogation was generally unfruitful. [1]
In 983 NE, Ishamael learned that she had given the order to search for and kill the Dragon Reborn. As punishment and an example to the rest of the Black Ajah, he trapped her within a ter'angreal whose function and means of activation remain unknown. For ten days no one could reach her, only listen to her throat-wrenching shrieks. Her death was all the more curious as she was not known to have prior any interest in ter'angreal.[1]
Every sister in Tar Valon and every sister who could reach Tar Valon in time attended her funeral, where they buried what was could be recovered of her body.[3]
Alviarin was personally appointed by Ishamael to replace her as Head of the Black Ajah.[1]
