He is a blacksmith of the Moshaine sept of the Shaido clan.

After the Moshaine Aiel step out of the gateway, they are quickly discovered by a larger force comprised of Reyn Aiel and an army of wetlanders (presumably Rand's supporters). Their sept chief, Maeric gives Hamal the task of pressing the red spot on the nar'baha in the hope that he can save some of their sept.
His fate is unknown. As a blacksmith, he will not be attacked by any Aiel, but the opposing army also included wetlanders who would have no such restrictions. They would be unlikely to kill a group that was not hostile, however.
