Mera'din, the Brotherless, are the newest of the Aiel warrior societies. When the Car'a'carn spread the news about the true origins of the Aiel, many were unwilling to follow someone who spread such news about them, regardless of the truth of it. Some of these (all men) joined the Shaido clan who were already in rebellion against him; they were scorned for abandoning their clans and septs, and began to be referred to as the "Brotherless". They eventually seized on this title, given in scorn, as a way to adjust to their new circumstances.
