[edit] New page

Hi, I'm creating a new page, PlotLines. To create a new page in a wiki you have to link to it from somewhre, but unfortunately I don't know what's the appropriate place. If someone knows, I'd be grateful if you deleted this message and moved it to the right place. Thanks!

I don't know how similar this to what you are hoping for, but note 998 NE. --Gherald 04:29, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Featured articles

I think this wikia needs a daily featured article.

I believe we need more articles and more regular editors before FAs are viable, especially daily ones. --Gherald 23:52, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
I believe we could at least have bi-monthly FA's

Sure we could, but it would be arbitrary. Firstly because we don't have enough good articles yet to come up with an objective criteria for being featured, and secondly because we don't have enough editors who would be interested in regular subjective voting.
With that said, if you really want to give FAs a go, no one is going to stand in yuor way. Feel free to come up with the first nomination, procedure, etc.
I for one believe your time would be better spent creating an account and helping us improve all these shabby non-featured artices we currently have to the point where an FA process makes more sense ;) --Gherald 21:13, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
OK. Just a suggestion.

[edit] Wanted pages

The Wanted pages section seems to have many chapters from the different books. Could we some how split it into two sections, one for the chapters needed to be written about and one for everything else- without losing the "7 spokes" theme.

Unfortunately, it's an automatically generated page. The reason so many TEotW chapter summary pages appear at the top is because there are many links to them from other pages. As far as I know the only way to make them disappear would be to write some custom javascript, which is tricky. But I might try it sometime... --Gherald 23:04, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

I understand... ok! -- K00ld00d

Ok, so it wasn't really that tricky. You may need to do a full refresh (CTRL+SHIFT+R or CTRL+F5) to clear your cache. --Gherald 21:16, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
So, got any way to show those for people who do want them, G? -- nae'blis 00:07, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
I could work on it if there is enough interest, but I doubt it. --Gherald 03:38, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
Or if someone wanted (hint, hint) to throw a template on the book pages (this might be a bot job), with the chapter lists and basic outline for the chapter, it might kill two birds with one stone: people would might be more willing to edit existing chapter summary pages, and it would simplify the Wantedpages a lot. I might not have time for doing that by hand for a while... I will at least go make a {{chapter-stub}} template, though. -- nae'blis 22:17, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
The problem with that is the links will not be red, which is rather useful information. --Gherald 23:26, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, but book chapter summaries are a little different creature from people, places, and things. -- nae'blis 00:02, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
They are different in some ways, but people being annoyed when we click on a link only to find no content is not one of them. --Gherald 00:11, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Questions

I just came up with a few questions. I don't know if anone here can answer them but maybe we can speculate on it... Here they are:

If you balefire someone in Tel'aran'rhiod how would it look in the real world? If someone was watching the sleep would they see thatperson just pop out of exxistence or would theyjust die normally? If you were strong enough to burn the thread back to when they were awake would they just be walking down a stree, for example, and just disappear,or just collapse and die, or would go back only to when they entered the Unseen World? Are the Aelfinn and Eelfinn some how related, as if they were once one species that split into two? Does their world have a Pattern like this one's. What are some of their laws? Does channeling work/exist there? If person A balefired person B and then person C balefired person A didn't balefire person B would person B not have been balefired our would person B still be dead/nonexistant? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.236.79.160 (talkcontribs) 01:05, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] search

Why does it go to wookieepedia if you click on the search logo? Did we borrow the format/template from there? Randfan 00:21, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

Fixed now. --TheParanoidOne 18:59, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] LoC:ch12

How come Lord of Chaos/Chapter 12 doesn't come up with any real content? Is it still in production or is it vandalized?

It had no content but an incorrect template usage and category; I deleted it for clarity. --Gherald 20:38, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Question regarding theories

Hello, I saw that you may house fanfiction, parodies, and theories later on and I wondered if my page Black Tower Foretelling was good, and if not, how should I edit it, what can it be linked to, etc. --Jenn Aiel 22:54, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Replied on his talk --Gherald 09:56, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
(re: Theories category) To aid this I've added a {{theory}} template to tag theory articles and automatically add them to Category:Theories. Aristoc 12:54, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
Thank you. I was wondering if theories/fanfiction should/would be a sidebar rather then category as it isn't precisely encyclopedia related. It could be perhaps linked to book or topics, but...thanks again for feedback. --Jenn Aiel 20:16, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
This isn't meant to be "just" an encyclopedia. From the very start I described this wiki as a "repository", and we'll accept virtually anything wot-related.

One of the things I'm starting to wish we had more of is fan art. Hmmmmm. --Gherald 12:17, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Copyright

We have had a complaint about users here taking text without permission from encyclopaedia-wot.org. This is not permitted and all content must be original or used with attribution from a site with content that is available under the GFDL. encyclopaedia-wot.org is not under a free license so text from there should never be used here. I have deleted some pages, mostly created by unregistered users, which were clearly copied from there and another wot site. If you are aware of any other pages that were copied, please ask an admin or staff to delete them. Thanks. Angela talk 18:13, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Couldn't you have just edited the articles? I mean, did you really have to delete them? Sorry if I offend, Insane Ta'veren Number 4 19:44, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
Unfortunately, the very first edit of the ones I deleted was the copyright violation, meaning any subsequent edits were derivative versions which are also violations of copyright. This means they need to be recreated without using the content of that first edit. Angela talk 19:54, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
I have not yet had time to go through the deletion log, but I have undid a number of reversions for which I could not find an indication of copyright violation. On some others I undid the reversion and added links to the GFDL site they were derived from. --Gherald 07:12, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Well, this is a lovely situation to return to :( I hadn't read this when I wrote the response on my Talk page; this at least explains what prompted the deletions. Speaking for myself, as an editor having had articles removed, I have to say I have never even visited encyclopaedia-wot, and not for lack of trying: I've never been able to connect to the site, it always times-out, in fact I didn't think it was even online anymore. I therefore find it hard to credit that my chapter summaries bear much relation to theirs other than they describe the same source material. Regarding Angela's clarification above, if it was the article skeleton structure in violation, and not the content itself, why delete only a handful of articles? Apologies for bleating about 'my' articles, but I know where I stand regarding them, at least. Aristoc 18:10, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

No, the skeletons are not copyrightable; they're just formatting and metadata. The violations in question are pretty much the body of summary pages. I've gone through the deletion log now and restored skeletons from the pages with copyright violations I could identify. Furthermore, I restored all pages for which I could not immediately locate a violation... please help double-check. --Gherald 06:22, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
I just figured out a way accessing the encyclopaedia-wot pages using Google's cached pages, so I'll try and go through them when I get a moment. I see that their chapter summaries generally run to one or two paragraphs, which makes it even harder to understand why the two that I wrote could be taken for plagiarism! Thanks, Gherald, for restoring them. Aristoc 12:44, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Guidelines

Everyone's assistance in dealing with copyright violations is appreciated, but to facilitate cooperation please observe the following guidelines: --Gherald 07:12, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

  1. Do not revert edits that include GFDL content from other sites for being "copyright violations". They are more specifically license violations which should be corrected by adding the appropriate link and -- if you want to be even more helpful -- warning the submitting user who neglected to do so.
  2. When reverting non-website copyright violations, please use the edit summary to name the work in question for reference.
  3. For reversions of website copyright violations (the most common type), please link back to the website in your edit summary, e.g. "rv copyright violation of http://example.com".
  4. For encyclopaedia-wot.org in particular, please also use Template:ewot to add a link to their article under ==External links==

[edit] Suggestions

Hey this is just an idea........ We could change the "flicker. flicker." button to Skimming. It would be a nice name seeing as it refers to the book.

With the other buttons we could change the names to. It would make the site look as if is apart of the book. Like a beginning could be changed to the Third Age, community portal could be the Stedding or grove, recent changes could also be Talents, and help could be called the white tower. these are just some cool suggestions

See Wotwiki:Sidebar for an old discussion . . flicker. flicker. actually does refer to one of the early books : ) --Gherald 05:37, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
I didnt notice that sorry for posting this again. and it does? now i got to go back and reread

[edit] Main page appearance

I like the legibility of the old version much better. I think it's hard to parse the text above the box on the current one. Any support for reverting this? --Gherald 00:52, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

I agree. --Fatidiot1234 02:51, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Doing some work on the wiki

Hi there, I recently rewrote some of the WoT articles on Wikipedia itself to strengthen them, and replicated some of the workload over here. I also added some new articles and pages, most on historical matters (the War of the Second Dragon, Shandalle, the Black Fever etc). Hope this helps!--Werthead 03:25, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Wotpedia

I just came across this other place which looks mostly inactive: Wotpedia --Gherald 23:19, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Contents on the main page...

I know we have a box and a sidebar, but wouldn't it look neater if the main page had a contents list? Is this something that is being worked on by anyone at the minute? I'm a bit hesitant to edit anything on there.

It would be done in bulleted list form with links to the main sections. Subsections might also be created. I see that there is something mentioned about a 'seven spokes' theme. what is this?

A good theme would be that of the White Tower library, which has twelve repsitories - and the secret thirteenth. If we could come up with twelve topic titles to sort all the articles into, then we could have the 'secret' Thirteenth as the main editing hub.

Just a few ideas to throw out there! Thanks in advance for any reponses!

Moridin 2000 18:51, 5 November 2008 (UTC)Moridin_2000

Just a thought: any ideas on adding the WoT info box from the front page, the one with all the books listed, to the bottom of every page on the novels? For example, we already have the Ten Nations and Nations of the Free Years boxes for the kingdom pages, so it would seem to make sense to have something similar with all the books listed on each individual page for the novels.--Werthead 17:36, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, that would be a good idea. We should also have an image of the cover of each book on those pages. Or as part of the chapter listing template. I'll look into it soon, there may be an existing template somewhere that isn't being used. :)Moridin_2000 18:56, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Warning Tab on this page

I fell there needs to be one since the articles don't really say this tells about book number like 11 if someone has not read it and for when book 12 comes ou and people are waiting to read or something the spoiler warning is there to let them know that we want have a huge tab saying spoiler for each article.--Optimous 14:29, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] News

I was thinking of adding a news section with updates that are directly from dragonmount.com. What do you think? Good idea? I will start making it and we can decide if we want to keep it.--Optimous 15:31, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

Excellent idea and it works quite well.--Werthead 02:57, September 19, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Rounded edges

I think I'm going to change the boxes(News box, Featured Article, etc.) to have rounded edges using some code from here: [1]--Optimous 19:57, September 11, 2009 (UTC)

Again, a very nice job. With the book cover images, do we want to add another row for the three new novels and the guide? Whilst we don't have covers for Towers of Midnigh and A Memory of Light yet, we do have entries, so perhaps we could just use the Wheel-and-serpent logo as a generic placeholder for them?--Werthead 02:59, September 19, 2009 (UTC)
