Taren Ferry is a town that sits on the banks of the Taren River just inside the Two Rivers.
The houses there are built on high redstone foundations so that they will not flood when the Taren overruns its banks, as it does with the spring thaw each year.
[edit] Name
The town's name likely comes from the fact that there is at least one ferry there capable of carrying people and animals across the wide Taren River. After Rand al'Thor and company used the ferry here to cross the Taren River after the Trolloc attack on Winternight, the ferry they had crossed on mysteriously broke free from its moorings and sank in a whirlpool. There is some indication that Moiraine Sedai sank the craft deliberately. It is not known if other ferries existed at the time or if the one that sank has since been replaced.
[edit] Destruction
Large numbers of people in the city were killed by Trollocs while the Children of the Light, "Ordeith", and Perrin were fighting the Two Rivers, though some are said to have fled and survived.
[edit] People
The people of Taren Ferry seldom visit Watch Hill, Emond's Field, or Deven Ride -- which they call the lower villages -- and are considered strange and untrustworthy by the people of those villages.
