Summary[]

Point of view: Matrim Cauthon

Mat awakens and cannot tell if the thoughts of battles and Moiraine are dreams. Everything is bits and fragments. He thinks of a battle where he is giving commands and knows that he must win or die. Mat does not know if this is real but he is known as a gambler.[1] Mat remembers Moiraine and knows something of Shadar Logoth, and a dagger. Something about going to Tar Valon to be Healed. Mat finds the tray with enough food to feed four men and realizes how hungry he is. He first has to find out where he is though. It must be Tar Valon since that is the only place he could be Healed. They used the Power on him, but he can't worry about that now, it's done and it's better than dying.

Mat tries to work out how he can come out ahead during a stay in Tar Valon. He wonders what Rand is up to. As he ponders on his situation and thinks about his friends, he finds that he has eaten all of the food that was laid out. He decides that a bit of gambling to fill his purse followed by a quick exit is his best course of action. He would like to talk Egwene and Nynaeve out of becoming Aes Sedai but doubts he will be able to. Suddenly he remembers that he blew the Horn of Valere and that Aes Sedai are not likely to let him scamper off. There is a knock at the door and it begins to open.

Notes

  1. This appears to be a memory of Aemon al Caar al Thorin at his final battle.
