A Wheel of Time Wiki
"There is one Creator, who exists everywhere at once for all of these worlds. In the same way, there is only one Dark One, who also exists in all of these worlds at once. If he is freed from the prison the Creator made in one world, he is freed on all. So long as he is kept prisoner in one, he remains imprisoned on all."
   — Verin Mathwin

Setting: White Tower

Summary[]

Point of view: Egwene al'Vere

Egwene is summoned to Verin's study while doing chores in the kitchen. On her way she sees a flash of white that might have been a novice or Accepted.[1] Verin's front room is cluttered with maps, sky charts, books, scrolls and even an owl to take care of mice. Verin also has a collection of bones and skulls, including one of a Trolloc. Verin reads from a very old manuscript page written by Rosel of Essam that links Ba'alzamon to Ishamael. Verin provides Egwene with all of the information about Liandrin and the other Black Ajah Aes Sedai including information on the ter'angreal that were stolen. Egwene ponders the possibility of Verin being Black Ajah herself but dismisses it; she has known Verin for a while now and thinks well of her.

Verin mentions Anaiya's tests on Egwene's dreams which are inconclusive so far and explains that the last recorded Dreamer in the Tower was Corianin Nedeal. From what Verin read in the records though, Corianin barely deserved the label. Verin begins a lecture to Egwene on the World of Dreams. There are many possible worlds, some of which can be reached by the Portal Stones, but they are all linked by the World of Dreams, Tel'aran'rhiod. Although there are countless different worlds, there is only one Creator and one Dark One; if the Dark One is freed in one, he is free in all. Verin explains that a Dreamer can enter Tel'aran'rhiod. Egwene may find out eventually whether she can do that, but Verin notes that time is of the essence because of the urgency of finding the Black Ajah. Any tool that may be of use should be harnessed if possible.

Verin thinks Anaiya brings girls along too slowly and she brings out a ter'angreal to give to Egwene. It is the twisted stone ring that Corianin Nedeal kept in her possession. Corianin wrote that it would let anyone, with or without Talent, to enter the World of Dreams, as long as the user sleeps with it touching their skin.[2] Verin warns that the World of Dreams is dangerous as what happens there is real; she shows Egwene a scar from a wound that she sustained there which could not be fully Healed. Egwene promises to be careful and considers whether she is better off not touching the ter'angreal at all. Verin reminds Egwene that novices or Accepted are not supposed to have ter'angreal in their possession so she must keep it hidden.

Point of view: Verin Mathwin

After Egwene's departure, Verin gathers Corianin's notes which she decided not to pass on to Egwene. As far as she knows, no other living Aes Sedai knows about the dream ter'angreal. Egwene is not ready to see the notes yet, but perhaps later.

Notes

  1. Or Lanfear.
  2. Based on Verin's assessment of Corianin's abilities, Corianin may not have been a Dreamer at all and simply used the ter'angreal to enter and study Tel'aran'rhiod.
