Setting: White Tower

Summary[]

Point of view: Egwene al'Vere

Egwene steps out of the third arch, angry at the repeated need for her to abandon Rand in the ter'angreal. She looks up and sees the Amyrlin and the other Aes Sedai; she realizes not all is as it should be. Two of the Aes Sedai near the ter'angreal are sweating. Sheriam immediately delves her and surprisingly finds that Egwene is unharmed. Siuan completes the ceremony and announces that Egwene is now an Accepted of the White Tower; she is no longer of Emond's Field. She is now sealed to the Tower. Siuan welcomes her and address her as Daughter rather than child. Siuan tells Sheriam to make sure that Egwene is all right and to investigate what happened before going to speak with the other Aes Sedai.

Egwene puts on an Accepted's dress and waits for Elaida to hand her back her belongings. The twisted stone ring ter'angreal is still there and the papers about the Black Ajah; she cannot tell if anyone has looked at the papers. Elaida is still displeased with Egwene and says she is a wilder at heart and will never have a proper place in the White Tower. Elaida then turns and leaves the chamber.

Egwene asks Sheriam what happened but Sheriam does not know. Alanna comes over and admits that she should have stopped the test when she noticed the resonance. Later in the test it came back stronger than ever and seemed to want to shut off the flow of saidar to the ter'angreal; Egwene would have been lost had they lost that flow. It also seemed that the ter'angreal almost melted. Alanna volunteers to share in Egwene's punishments for failing to halt the testing which Sheriam dismisses as ridiculous. Alanna recalls a similar incident years ago when two ter'angreal related to each other were used in the same room. The ter'angreal melted together and gave all the sisters in the room terrible headaches lasting for a week. This causes Egwene to realize the resonance came from the twisted stone ring interfering with the silver arches.[1] Because Egwene had apparently chosen the Green Ajah in her viewed future, she questions Alanna about what it means to be Green. Alanna is incredibly pleased and says that the Green Ajah stands ready to do battle at Tarmon Gai'don. The Amyrlin allows her a visit to Sheriam for punishment but will not allow her to do chores in the kitchen.

Egwene does not want to be alone after the trials of her test and so heads to Nynaeve's room. Elayne is there also and has been crying since due to her own testing. Nynaeve's eyes are also damp. Seeing Elayne's emotion causes Egwene to let hers out also. Nynaeve comforts them both and vows that one day they will make the Aes Sedai pay for their treatment of them.

Notes

  1. The resonance must have been what caused Egwene to forget Sheriam's instructions about how to return. The resonance suggests that both ter'angreal have similar functions, i.e., accessing Tel'aran'rhiod.
