Summary[]
- Point of view: Perrin Aybara
They enter the village of Jarra and it seems as though the people had a feast recently. Perrin thinks he smells something "wrong," very faintly, but doesn't know what it is.[1] They go to the inn and the sweeper outside, Simion, is startled by Loial until he learns that Loial is an Ogier. They dismount and Moiraine asks if they had a wedding, and Simion says they had a plague of weddings. Day and night, more than in the last fifty years! Simion then gets stable boys to tend the horses and prompts the party to go inside for beds and meals. Once inside, Simion shows them to some upstairs rooms.
Moiraine learns from Simion that Whitecloaks came through yesterday and behaved very oddly. Three of them declared that they were no longer Whitecloaks and rode away, effectively deserting. Their officer could not stop them because there was other trouble; one Whitecloak left to hunt for the Horn of Valere and another departed for Almoth Plain to hunt the Dragon there. Then other Whitecloaks started grabbing at women in the streets and were stopped by the remaining Whitecloaks, almost coming to blows. Another two Whitecloaks declared the entire village Darkfriends and tried to burn it down, but were thankfully also stopped by other Whitecloaks. The innkeeper, Herod, now despises the Whitecloaks because of all this.
After finishing with Moiraine, Simion shows Perrin and Loial to their room. Perrin asks Simion if he saw someone matching Rand's description. Apparently Rand came through and played the flute for all the weddings in exchange for food and board. He awoke in the middle of the night rambling about someone being after him and left immediately, heading east. Perrin says that they are following Rand to help him and Simion thinks Moiraine means to catch up to Rand and Heal him. Simion recognizes Moiraine as Aes Sedai and asks if she'll help his brother Noam too. Perrin agrees to ask her but makes no promises.
Perrin goes to tell Moiraine and Lan that Rand stayed in the inn the night before. She says that was obvious since Rand's ta'veren nature was behind the weddings and the Whitecloak actions. Moiraine chastises him for asking so openly as their enemies will know they have been here. Lan seems to suggest to Moiraine that he kill Simion to silence him but she says no. Perrin tells her about Simion's brother and they go to the stable. Noam has golden eyes and Simion says that he has been saying he can talk to wolves. Perrin reaches out to Noam and knows that he feels like a wolf. Moiraine sets about trying to Heal him and says she cannot. There is nothing in him that remembers being a man. Perrin says he won't get any better and asks Simion to let him go free, as wolves cannot be caged. Simion agrees and also tells him that the Whitecloaks were looking for a man with yellow eyes named Perrin Aybara, who they named Darkfriend. Perrin asks if he believes the Whitecloaks, but Simion says that he does not believe a Darkfriend would care about Noam as Perrin did. He believes Moiraine healed Perrin of a madness like Noam's before he got too far gone.
