"A young wolfhound must meet his first wolf someday, but if the wolf sees him as a puppy, if he acts the puppy, the wolf will surely kill him. The wolfhound must be a wolfhound in the wolf's eyes even more than in his own, if he is to survive."

Setting: Tifan's Well

Point of view: Moiraine Damodred

Moiraine sits surrounded by books and scrolls.  She and Lan are in a town called Tifan's Well, in Arafel, where Adeleas and Vandene live.  They have been retired from the White Tower for a long time, and intend to write the history of the world from before the Breaking to present times.  Moiraine could not find what she was looking for, so she says to Lan, that in the event of her death, his Warder bond will be passed to Myrelle, a Green sister.  He is not happy about this, saying he won’t be passed around like a lapdog.  Moiraine says that Myrelle will only keep his bond until she finds someone more suitable.   Moraine sends Lan out of the room, saying she needs to think.

Vandene (green ajah) comes in with tea, and wants to know if Moiraine found what she was looking for.  She hasn't and the two begin talking of history.  Vandene, says that Mordeth lives in Shadar Logoth, waiting for a soul to steal.  Moiraine then asks about Lanfear.  Vandene knows no more about her than Moiraine does.

Moiraine goes out to the garden, finding no answers inside.  A Draghkar is waiting for her.  Draghkars don’t outwardly harm you.  They hum to you seductively, and slowly warp your mind before they kill you.  Before she could fully feel the Draghkar’s kiss, though, Lan and Vandene’s warder Jaem kill it.  Moiraine thinks that the Black Ajah must have summoned and warded the Draghkar, otherwise she would have been able to detect it.
