— Rand to Mat, Perrin and Ingtar after the Horn of Valere was stolen again.
|<<< Daes Dae'mar >>>|
|Setting: Street outside The Defender of the Dragonwall, Cairhien (city)|
- Point of view: Rand al'Thor
No one has heard the truth of what happened at the Illuminator's guild a few nights ago. Rand knows what happened, though, and thinking about them makes him think of Selene. They are in their rooms at the inn, and Hurin wakes up and tells Rand he will take the next watch over the Horn. There is a knock at the door, and the innkeeper is there, with invitations for Lord Rand. Rand plans to burn them like the others but Hurin notices that they are from the two most powerful nobles in Cairhien, Lord Barthanes and the King. Hurin points out to him that because of the nature of these invitations, Rand could be getting himself killed by ignoring or burning them. Rand decides to let everyone see him in the common room with them, unopened and unburned. He tells Loial once they get outside, that this trick won't work very long, and they have to get out of the city.
They go to the guard house, and again, they are told that no one named Ingtar or Selene has passed through. He asks about Caldevwin, whom Rand saw in the guardhouse, and the guard says he hasn't seen him either. After they leave the guardhouse, Loial notices a fire up ahead, and they see that it is their inn. Running inside, they see people with buckets inside trying to put out the fire. It appears to have started in their rooms. Rand runs up the stairs and crawls to their room. The chest is gone and Hurin is unconscious. Loial is worried about his books, but says they'll have to burn once he sees he cannot get to them. Rand helps Loial drag Hurin outside and also decides he needs to bring the dragon banner even though he would rather let it burn. As he starts to ask for a wise woman or healer Rand hears Mat's voice. Ingtar, Mat, and Perrin have arrived at last, but too late.
