Theory of what will happen in A Memory of LIght

MegaZeroX January 29, 2012

Note that this is only my personal guess of what will happen in A Memory of Light. Nothing here should be taken as a fact or solid information of what actually will happen. This won't fulfill all of the prophesies or expectations of the book. However, this will fulfill many of the large unknown prophesies, such as "He shall hold a blade of light in his hands, and the three shall be one."

First, Rand will discuss his plans with Egwene and the rest of the armies engulfing the Field of Merrilor, and eventually convinces them all that it is necessary to break the seals. Next, Moiraine will Travel to the Field of Merrilor. She will meet with Rand, talk for a short time, then Rand will choose her for the second person to be linked with him in the Last Battle. At the same time, Mat will find out about the Shadowspawn attacking Caemlyn and acts quickly to attempt to defend Caemlyn. He will attempt to meet up with any Kin remaining in the Caemlyn Palace to get them to send a message to Elayne (and anyone else in the Field of Merrilor).

Elayne will receive the message, and Rand will send out a contingent of soldiers/Asha'man (in addition to whatever Elayne sends), but neither will physically go to Caemlyn. Mat will take charge of the defense, and will be too preoccupied defending Caemlyn to be involved with the assault on the Blight. However, the battle surrounding Caemlyn will eventually become as big as the battle in the Blight. The reason the Shadow will focus so much effort on Caemlyn is because Andor is militarily the strongest nation in the Westlands. It has the backing of the White Tower, the Dragon Reborn, is politically interwoven with Cairhien, is fortified with Dragons, and contains the Black Tower itself. Additionally, the Shadow is cocky that they will win already and wishes to strike fear into the hearts of people walking in the Light Capturing their strongest city will do just that.

At the same time, a Civil War will break out within the Black Tower, with the Darkfriends against the followers of the Light. Perrin in Towers of Midnight stated that he would investigate if there was a Dreamspike in the Black Tower next time he slept. Perrin will do so and remove the Dreamspike, inform Rand about its presence, and implore him to send some Asha'man to investigate. Rand will send some reinforcements when he learns of the battle. He, however, will force himself to remain because he must. Perrin's army will be among the reinforcements and Perrin will be in charge of the Light's side of the battle.

With such little men left, Rand very reluctantly informs Nynaeve that he might not have enough men to save Lan in Tarwin's Gap. He will still send most of the rest of his army, but it probably will not hold against the millions of Trollocs. Nynaeve responds that she might decide stay with Lan until the end. Rand understands, but will need a replacement. He thinks upon it, but is unable to come up with a decision that day.

Aviendha returns later that day and informs Rand of what she saw in the Glass columns. Rand decides to force the Aiel Way to return to the Way of the Leaf, AKA the Covenant. Rand then makes the actions to do so. This completely shatters any hope Nynaeve had of Lan surviving. With that, she makes her decision to stay with Lan until the end. She informs Rand, who becomes anxious. Rand decides to meditate on what his decision for a replacement will be the next day while he sleeps.

The next day, Rand has his decision: he will take Alivia. Not only is she very strong (to balance out for Moraine's new weakness in the One Power), she is also 400 years old and very skilled in offensive weaves. She will also help him die, which he knows must happen at Shayol Ghul so she seems the obvious choice. He discovers that Nynaeve has already left to be with Lan in his final moments. He sends the rest of his military to aid Lan however they can. He, Moraine, and Alivia prepare and Travel to Shayol Ghul, with them linked to buffer Callandor.

At Shayol Ghul, Moridin is waiting, surprisingly, with a Callandor of his own! (See [1] He is linked with Cyndane and Graendal/Moghedien to buffer the effects. Callandor's other "use" (that Min was tasked to find) is that it can act as a sa'angreal for the True Power. A battle ensues between the two groups with neither side victorious. The flaw eventually becomes apparent. The two Callandors link the holders in a way even stronger than the twin balefires. This rapidly increases their connection and the fabled "body swap" happens. Rand, right before he will lose control, tells Alivia and Moraine to kill him, and quick. Fortunately, both understand and are quick to act. Moridin understands that a body swap is imminent. He tells the same to Cydnane and Graendal/Moghedien, but they fear it is a trap. Rand is "killed", his blood is shed, but he lives on in Moridin's body. With Rand in control, he uses his position to force his linked partners to help him re-seal the Dark One. He quickly explains to his previous partners, and adds them to the circle. He uses all three of the Powers (the Saidar, Saidin, and the True Power) to create the new seals. "And the three shall become the One."

Like I said before this doesn't cover EVERYTHING and what everyone's roles are (ie. Demandred) in the Last Battle, but I have a feeling this is how many of the story paths will lead. Mainly, I believe I am one of the few people that believe Mat/Perrin won't be in the Blight for the final battle.

  • Yes that all sounds about right and probably what most of us suspect. One possible plot thread is Logain/ Taim, I'm almost certain that Taim is a darkfriend in some capacity and, of course, there is Min's viewing of Logain that he will do something glorious. Perhaps a civil war within the black tower? There's also Perrin's part in all of this, he still has a bigger role to play I believe and of course Padan Fain is something of a wild card in all of this - who knows what he will get up to?

  • I think Demandred is destined to fight his final battle with Mat, the leading modern general against perhaps the greatest military commander of all time..... And it would also be an even contest if the two were to fight. Demandred's use of the one power is neglected by the foxhead medallion, and both are more than capable fighters.

  • Ok, I might as well put my 2 cents in...I believe that before anything concerning Tarmon Gai'don wise happens Mat and Moiraine will Travel to the fields of Merrilor. When Rand realises that Mat is in one of the camps they, and Perrin, decide to spend one evening reminiscing of better days. During their Discussion Rand finds out about Mat becoming Prince of the Ravens the three of them travel to Ebou Dar. In accordance with Min's viewing about the sparks being swallowed by darkness yet holding it at bay when all three of them are together, the effect of 3 Ta'veren working together will persuade Tuon in a suite of peace. After Peace is made Rand will formally bow to the empress on her throne thus fullfilling another prophecy. Nowhere does it say Rand will submit but simply bow, unless i am mistaken. In order to appease the Seanchan Mat will be placed in charge of their military forces as he is of the High Blood, not to mention Tuon's husband. Next after returning to Merillor, Aviendha returns to Rand and tells him about the possible future for the Aiel. Next they learn of the attack on Caemlyn. Perrin will be sent with Aviendha, the Two Rivers men and whom ever else Rand sends with him. During the retaking of Caemlyn, Perrin will find the ter'angreal that stores music and at somepoint after the battle discovers "THE SONG" has been stored in it with the help of Aviendha and the future of her people will be secured. Now for the KICKER!!! When Rand Travels to Shayol Ghul with his 2 female channelers (Alivia & Moiraine) they will Link with Callandor. As soon as their gateway opens however Moridin will travel to the same location. I agree fully with MegaZeroX's theory about 2 Callandors and the body swap. However just before the swap Rand will tell Alivia she must help him die. After the swap Alivia will notice Padan Fain skulking around and ignores him allowing him to slay Moridin(in Rands body) with his Shadar Logoth dagger. Rand now in Moridin's body will slay both Cyndane and Graendal/Moghedien. During the swap Dragonmount will explode covering the Battle areas in a blanket of ash that blocks the sun because the Dragon is bound the land and once Rand is in controle of his new body Dragonmount will still and the sun become visible again and thus fulfilling the "Twice Dawns the Day Prohpecy"

All the other loose ends such as Demandred, Perrin dying, etc.... Screw it IDK. but let me know what you think about my theory.

  • What About Padan Fain? I know he was only mentioned in the prologue of ToM, but I think he will play a large part as it seems he is the embodiment of Mashadar. Personally I don't have a theory on what role he would have but I am curious if anyone else does.

    • imo i agree with megazero about the body switch but i think that Fain will show up a kill Rand's body with moradin in it without realizing the switch happened.

  • Only speculations but i think the seanchan will 100% be at the last battle. There are 2 prophesies about the dragon reborn and the seanchan working together. 1 is that rand must bind the daughter of the nine moons(Tuon) . 2 is a seanchan prophesie that tells that the dragon must bow his head to the empress throne. As seen in the books there is no throne in seanchan anymore so that will happen infron of Tuon(the new empress).

  • If you ask me Demandred is probably Taim. Every time Rand meets him lewis therin starts mumbling about killing him , that mostly happens when he talks or meets other Chosen. Ashmodean dies(disapears) around the time Taim comes to rand for the first time. Demandred knows that Ashmodean can recognize him.

    • It has been confirmed that Demandred is not Taim. RJ himself stated that in interviews before his death. Ashmodean was killed by Greandal, as said in ToM. Ashmodean probably wouldn't have recognized Taim if he was Demandred, because it's easy for the Chosen to change their appearance.

  • I think that Moraine's secret is tied to Cyndane (Lanfear). She was there when the bore was opened. She has the knowledge to reseal it. I think that somehow, Rand must have Moraine and Cyndane in a circle with Callandor to succeed.

  • On the field on Merrilor it is made apparent that rand will force them into the treaty of the dragon if they wish to fight in the last battle. The debate is not on whether to break the seals or not, he has already made his decision on that point.

  • This theory is better than anything I could have come up with.

However, I think Aviendha's vision is compelling evidence that Rand has to deal with the Seanchan before he goes to Shayol Ghul. The people of the world need to present a united front to effectively combat the shadow, and currently the Seanchan are weakening that united front, by attacking the White Tower, and trying to conquer the entire continent.

This is why Rand was unable to negotiate a truce with the Seanchan. Their practice of collaring saidar channelers was a deal breaker during Rand's meeting with Tuon. Somehow, Rand will have to break them of this practice, and force their loyalty to him, just as he has allied almost all other nations and peoples to him.

I don't know whether Rand will do this himself, or another character (such as Mat, the Prince of Ravens now) will be the one to break them.

  • I feel it to be more likely that Rand will convince them of the necessity to break the seals, but they will convince him to wait. After all, he still has to "bind the nine moons to him," and that can only by done by apologizing to the Empress. Also, I feel that Shara will play a key role, as it was mentioned that there were dragonsworn in Shara. This could turn very much to Rand's advantage as the Ayyad (having been bred for thousands of years to channel) will likely be strong and numerous.

  • 1. logain and taim are missing both are crucial to the black tower collapse 2. elyane's warder - silver bow - needs to be reunited with gaidal cain - dispite cntyain's reluctency 3.caudsaun - come on the gal is most importent to the ending 4. Asmodin's little double agent - i think the reason why demandred is MIA is because he's doing a VERY VERY bad think , he's collecting all the bad characters - all the gaints and other monsters and ties single handedly to become both the Dark one and Creator sorta like loki from nordic mythology and trying to make sure that moridin\rand will survive due to the fa ct that the 2 people are actually the same person , such as LTT and Demandred were, when Asmo realised it He got burned inorder to keep this as a secret in other words Demandred is not located or seen because the method it using to change into other people places is through the ghollam ...

  • This still does'nt explain abt where Demandred is.....

    • Demandred is probably Taim. There is alot of proof in the books. The bigest one is pobably the disapearence( death ) of Ashmodean. Just before Taim apears infront of Rand Ashmodean disapears or is killed by someone he knows(just befor his death he says "YOU" as if he knows the guy). Damandred knows that Ashmodean is with Rand and that he can expose him as a false Taim thats why he is killed.

    • Aside from the fact that Graendal killed Asmodean and Robert Jordan emphatically stated that Demandred is not Taim.
