He was a rug seller during the Whitecloak War. During this time, he peddled his wares through Altara, Murandy and Illian, all the while providing 'good service' to Pedron Niall. He was one of Niall's best personal agents.

From the profit he made during those years, Varadin set himself up as a wealthy merchant in Tanchico trading in fine carpets and wines.

He regularly supplies to both the King of Tarabon and the Panarch, as well as many important nobles. Each time he visits, he comes back with his eyes and ears full.

He sends messages warning about strange creatures, flying beasts, Aes Sedai on leashes and the 'Hailene'. Niall thinks he has gone insane.
