Wise One

Wise Ones are the matriarchal leaders of the Aiel. Every Aiel woman who can channel or Dreamwalk will become apprenticed to the Wise Ones, though there are also many Wise Ones who can do neither.

In recent times the Aiel did not speak of the fact that Wise Ones could channel, and all Wise Ones avoided contact with Aes Sedai. Wise Ones have great influence among the clans and also great responsibility. All are trained in the arts of herbs and healing. They also do not get involved in blood-feuds and according to ji'e'toh cannot be harmed or impeded in any way. Until recently they had also never been directly involved in battle.

Some of the Aiel Wise Ones are alsos, able to enter Tel'aran'rhiod. This seems to be a much more common ability among the Aiel than it is on the other side of the Spine of the World.

To become a Wise One first an apprentice must go to Rhuidean and enter a ter'angreal much like the one at the White Tower for Aes Sedai. But instead of facing one's fears, one sees their future, laid out for them many many times in variation. After training is complete the apprentice then returns to Rhuidean to the center of the city and learns the secret history of the Aiel.
