GNU Free Documentation License[]

The GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) is a copyleft license for free content, designed by the Free Software Foundation (FSF).

The GFDL is a copyleft license, meaning the content can be copied, modified, and redistributed so long as the new version grants the same freedoms to others and acknowledges the authors of the Wikia page. Wikia content will, therefore, will remain free forever and can be used by anybody subject to certain restrictions, most of which serve to ensure that freedom.

Wikipedia, one of the web's most popular reference works, uses the GFDL. Using the same license as that site makes it easy for Wikia users to reuse the content from Wikipedia. You must adhere to the GFDL when using Wikipedia content. An easy way to link back to Wikipedia is to use the shared template {{w:Wikipedia|Page title}}.

Things to look out for[]

The following are some "danger signs" when it comes to copyright violations:

  • A chapter summary that starts out as "charname - POV" was probably copied from EWoT.
  • An article that begins with a sentence fragment -- that is to say, the name of the the article does not appear in the first sentence, so the sentence has no subject -- may have been copied from EWoT.

Image guidelines[]

GFDL or public domain images are strongly preferred on Wikia. Copyright-violating images are subject to deletion. Copyright information must be added to the image description page of every uploaded image.

  • I suggest we screw the low resolution = more likely to be fair use argument. Not even Wikipedia with all its lawyers can come to a consensus on this, so as an Encyclopedia that wishes to be taken as seriously as possible they opt to play it safe. I say we aim to offer the most precise coverage possible. Copyright holders are pretty much required to complain about infringement before doing anything else, so unless someone from a place like Tor books decides to do so, we should just assume we're in the right. --Gherald 04:13, 27 Oct 2005 (UTC)
